179 Canal has hosted a number of events, all of which involved very active artists, curators, musicians, and dealers working together: Swiss Institute and James Fuentes LLC, George Positive (Armory 09 Party), Klaus Von Nichtssagend, Rings, Josh Kline (EAI), Barbara Corti and Mari Spirito (303 Gallery), Annemarie Ho, Liam Everett, Kate Bush Dance Troupe, Peter LaBier, Common Space, No Bra, Antoine Catala, Yemenwed (Performa 09), Emily Sundblad, Ylva Ogland, Matthew Higgs, Margaret Lee (Betteraves Club/Performa 09), Maria Petschnig, Melanie Maar, Elena Bajo and many others.
Upcoming, we have a group show curated by Brian Droitcour (Rhizome); 3 collaborations between Jeremy Eilers/Kerstin Bratsch, Graham Anderson/Caitlin Keogh and Alisa Baremboym/ Thomas Torres Cordova; an ongoing play by Anicka Yi; a solo show by Josh Kline and many more performances.
However, our landlord recently informed us that he can no longer provide the space rent-free. None of our upcoming programming will be realized unless we raise enough money to begin paying rent, at a reduced rate.
We are reaching out to you today to humbly ask for assistance. More then just a venue to present new work, the space offers a public place for conversation and engagement outside of the commercial establishment. The loss of 179 Canal would be a loss of a flexible space that can cater to the whimsical nature of artist’s projects; it is a real place for emerging artists to experiment and take risks and there are not nearly enough of these places left in NYC.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of December. This should be enough to carry us into 2010 and provide the necessary funds while we apply for grants. No one receives any income in running 179 Canal and all the money we raise will go towards keeping the space active. We have just received fiscal sponsorship from Fractured Atlas so all donations are tax deductible.*
THANK YOU and hope to see you in 2010.
